Historically, institutions of higher education have played critical roles in the creation of mistrust with Native American communities through forced assimilation and cultural genocide. Universities and colleges must now demonstrate dedication and commitment to providing the personal, social, academic and cultural support necessary for Native American students to be successful, while recognizing the balance between their “new” wisdom with their cultural knowledge. As it is, Native American students, Native American student support staff and faculty continually face an uphill road when trying to create an environment which is culturally relevant and academically meaningful in the post-secondary environment.

This mini conference, hosted by the University of Idaho, is an opportunity to dialogue about the current and future methods of Native American student support structures across the country. Further, new culturally relevant strategies and models for support for Native American students will be demonstrated for participants to learn and develop. This conference is for anyone who seeks to develop or continue to enhance systems of support for Native American students.
