For many people, when they hear the word "advising," they think of choosing classes. However, good advising involves more than just registration. A good advisor develops a mentoring relationship with his or her advisees. Students need help with many different aspects of college life. For this session we will discuss the one required meeting that you will have with advisees and in the Advising 102 session we will prepare you for other types of meetings that you might have.

This session will cover topics such as, what is registration advising, what is FERPA, when does registration advising happen, the mechanics of Vandal Web and your first advising meeting. Even if you have not begun advising, you will walk away with a solid foundation for your first advising meetings.

Advising 102, Taking the Plunge
Sara Stout, Journalism & Mass Media

Once you have mastered Vandal Web and held your first registration advising meeting, you will be able to incorporate so much more into future advising meetings, and you will become an effective mentor. Many times it is necessary to make referrals when students have issues outside of academic advice. In this session we will cover your first advising meeting, probation, study abroad, campus resources, and much more.
