What's Up Weekly at the Women's Center?

November 16-22, 2009

WOMEN'S CENTER PROGRAMS

Taking a Bite out of Twilight: Race, Class, and Gender Through a Vampire’s Eyes
Wednesday, November 18th
12:30 pm
Women’s Center Lounge
Just days before the release of the second “Twilight” movie, “New Moon”, we will explore the “Twilight” series and examine how race, class, and gender are portrayed in teen literature. Does this popular series perpetuate racism? How does classism play out in the dynamics between Bella, Jacob, and Edward? What gender dynamics are evident between the interplay of the main characters? Upon exploring these questions, we will ask – does this matter and why should we be concerned with these norms in popular teen literature? This event is FREE and open to ALL!

LGBTQA Office's Lavender Lunch
Thursday, November 19th
12:30 - 1:30 pm
Student Diversity Center (TLC 229)
Come and have lunch while we observe Transgender Day of Remembrance.

The Icarus Project: a new group on campus that envisions a new culture and language that resonates with our actual experiences of ‘mental illnesses’ rather than trying to fit our lives into a conventional framework. We are a network of people living with experiences that are commonly labeled as bipolar or related madness. We believe we have dangerous gifts to be cultivated and taken care of, rather than a disease or disorder to be “cured” or “eliminated.” By joining together as individuals and as a community, the intertwined threads of madness and creativity can inspire hope and transformation in a repressed and damaged world. Our participation in The Incarus Project helps us overcome alienation and tap into the true potential that lies between brilliance and madness.  For more information about the University of Idaho’s branch of The Icarus Project, please email: icarusprojectuidaho@gmail.com

WOMEN'S READING CLUB: Please contact group leaders Dinah Zeiger or Rami Attebury or visit www.uidaho.edu/womenscenter/articleclub for more information!
