For Parents
Parents and family members play an important role in the student's success at the University of Idaho.  Their support, understanding and encouragment for a student's academic endeavors is essential.

Whether the family members have attended college themselves or the student is the first-generation to attend college there are a number of campus resources that the family should be aware of.  Note:  these links will open in a new browser window.

Academic Advising
All undergraduate students at the University of Idaho are required to meet with an academic advisor each semester prior to registration.  The student and advisor will review the student's career and academic goals and discuss course selection.  The advisor is assigned by the student's academic department.  Each department maintains a contact person who can help a student identify who their assigned advisor is if the student hasn't met with the advisor before.  A list of advising contacts is available on our website.

FERPA
The Family and Educational Rights and Privacy Act, also referred to as the Buckley Amendment, mandates that college academic records are the "property" of the student.  This means that students must give permission for grades and some other information about their academic performance and enrollment to be discussed--even with their parents.

This lack of access to information is sometimes a surprise for parents and family members who many times have a financial investment in the student's education.  The Registrar's Office can answer questions about FERPA and accessing student information.

Parent Newsletter

The Dean of Students sends out an email newsletter several times each semester.  Parents and family members who would like to receive this email information can send their name and email address to askjoe@uidaho.edu.

Parents Homepage
The Dean of Students Office maintains a website with information for Parents.  They also organize Parent Orientation in August just before Fall Semester.

Tutoring and Academic Assistance Programs
Tutoring and other academic support is available to students in several ways.  Tutoring and Academic Assistance Programs includes three programs that offer different services:

  • Disability Support Services supports students needing accommodations for documented disabilities.
  • Student Support Services is a federally funded TRIO program that works with first-generation collec
  • Tutoring and Learning Services offers free group tutoring in a wide variety of classes.  This service is available to any student on campus.
