Welcome to the Dual Credit Program!
In this section:
Dual credit is a program that allows high school students to enroll in college courses for credit prior to high school graduation. College credits earned through dual credit can be applied toward high school and college graduation and can be transferred to other colleges or universities.
BenefitsDual credit eases the transition to college by giving students firsthand exposure to college-level work while earning high school and college credit simultaneously. Dual credit also provides a wider range of course options for high school students. Courses may be taught at the high school campus, the University of Idaho Moscow campus, or online depending on the arrangements made with the high school. Through this program, dual credit students can accumulate up to a full year's worth of credits prior to entering college that will help them graduate from college early or on time.

EligibilityHigh school students who are 16 years or older at the start of the semester or course, or who have completed at least half of their high school graduation requirements, and who are prepared for the demands of college-level coursework can enroll in the University of Idaho Dual Credit Program.
Please Note: Parent/guardian and high school principal or counselor signatures are required on the application/registration form. Students who are younger than 16 may enroll with permission from the course instructor. The university undergraduate admissions committee makes exceptions to these criteria on an individual basis.

ENROLLMENT STEPS
- Talk with a parent or guardian. Does taking a course or courses at the University of Idaho conflict with family schedules or high school extracurricular activities? Discuss future plans. Will taking university-level courses now help make the transition into college life or should students explore other possibilities that lead to a future career? If dual credit is definitely a viable option, students will have to make arrangements for transportation (i.e., getting to the university campus from home or high school). Taking dual credit courses is also a financial commitment. Since financial aid is not available to dual credit students, students need to decide how to pay for courses they take at the University of Idaho.
- Select a course. High school counselors can help dual credit students choose from a list of courses that will help fulfill high school graduation requirements as well as lay the foundation for an academic future. University of Idaho Class Schedules are available online at www.uidaho.edu/schedule.
- Fill out an Application and Registration for High School Dual Credit Form (linked here). Copies are also available in high school counselor and principal offices and by calling the University of Idaho Undergraduate Admissions Office at (208) 885-6326, the Dual Credit Office at (208) 885-6237 or emailing summer@uidaho.edu.
- Get all the necessary signatures (student, counselor or principal, parent or guardian).
- Submit the completed application.
- Fax forms to (208) 885-9061
- Mail forms to: University of Idaho Office of Dual Credit, PO Box 444262, Moscow, ID 83844-4262
- Deliver forms to: University of Idaho Office of Dual Credit, Student Union Building Room 119G, Moscow, Idaho (located in the Registrar's Office)
- Confirm your schedule! Check the online Class Schedule to confirm course times and locations. Go to www.uidaho.edu/schedule.

TEXT BOOKSDual credit students are responsible for purchasing their own textbooks. The University of Idaho Bookstore will have all the required textbooks for any class offered at the university. Students may choose to buy textbooks from an Internet source but should take care to get the edition or version specified by the instructor.
Home-schooled students enroll in much the same manner, except the parent/guardian will sign both the Parent/Guardian signature line and the High School Counselor signature line.
Once admitted, the Office of Dual Credit will enroll students in the selected course(s) on a space-available basis, provided they have met course prerequisites. A bill is generated and sent to the address noted on the form. The University of Idaho will notify students and their high school counselor regarding acceptance and registration status. Completed courses and grades will be shown on a non-degree transcript from the University of Idaho.

COURSE SELECTION
Dual credit students may take any course the university offers that is numbered at the 100 or 200 level. Prerequisites for the course must be met (see the University of Idaho Catalog). Students may take upper division courses (300 and 400 level) with permission of the university instructor. High school counselors will help students determine what courses apply to their high school graduation requirements.
For courses that require placement scores, like English, math, or chemistry, ACT, SAT, or COMPASS scores will help determine which course a dual credit student is qualified to take. If a student has taken the ACT or SAT and finds their scores unsatisfactory, placement may be challenged by taking the COMPASS Math or English test and scoring higher. If a student has not taken the ACT or SAT, COMPASS math and English tests are administered by the UI Counseling and Testing Center Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on a walk-in basis. Each test costs $15 (payable by personal check or money order) and takes approximately 45-60 minutes to complete. Contact the Counseling and Testing Center by calling (208) 885-6716 or visiting their office in the Continuing Education Building (CEB) Room 306. Photo ID is required.
Please Note: Students who wish to take a University of Idaho math course offered through their high school are exempted from taking the math placement test.
Dual credit students are treated the same as any other college student. They are subject to all college policies governing students while attending classes at the university.

ADDING AND DROPPING COURSESStudents may add courses or change course selections by filling out, and securing signatures on the Application and Registration for High School Dual Credit Form. Please note that dual credit students will not be able to add or drop courses online because any course change must be approved by the high school counselor (as indicated by their signature on the form). To change registration (add, drop or withdraw from a course), first get permission from the high school counselor, then call the Dual Credit Office at (208) 885-6237 or email at lstrong@uidaho.edu.
- A "drop" is when students are taken out of a class within the posted drop/add period of not receiving a grade of W (withdrawal from course). A dropped class is not transcripted.
- A "withdrawal" is when students are taken out of a class after the posted drop/add period (some instructors may withdraw students for nonattendance). A grade of "W" will be transcripted. This will not affect the student's college grade point average; however students should check their high school's policy on how a W affects their high school grade point average and eligibility for participating in high school activities and programs.
All dates and deadlines for dropping and withdrawing from UI courses can be found at the following locations:
- Spring/Fall Semesters, go to www.uidaho.edu/registrar and click on Catalogs & Class Schedules, then Academic Calendars (left menu)

DUAL CREDIT
High School
Students should check with their high school counselor to determine how college grades will impact high school grades, activities, and eligibilities as well as graduation requirements.
At the UI
Students who enroll at the UI under the Dual Credit Program are admitted as non-degree seeking students. When they decide to matriculate (or seek a degree) at the UI, their status is changed from non-degree seeking to degree seeking and they can register for classes like any other UI student.
Credit earned as a non-degree student will be moved to the undergraduate transcript upon admission as an undergraduate student unless the student specifically requests in writing to the Registrar's Office that all credits earned remain on the non-degree transcript.
Transferring Credits to Another University
University of Idaho credits will transfer to another Idaho college or university, but they may transfer as elective credits rather than course-for-course credits. Students should always check with the college/university they wish to attend to discuss transfer credits.
Please Note: Students must request an official UI transcript be sent to their transfer college.
